Sen. Imee Marcos joins rally fronting DOF

MANILA -- Senator Imee Marcos joined more than 1000 rallyists in front of the Department of Finance office Tuesday, September 26 by bringing food and water as show of support for those opposing DoF's proposed tariff reduction on imported rice.

Senator Marcos is not in favor of DoF's plan to continue with the importation of rice in the midst of harvest season starting this last week of September until October.

“Hindi papayag si BongBong dito. Sigurado ako diyan dahil lagot tayo sa tatay ko. Talaga naman, sigurado ako diyan.” The Super Ate ng Pangulo is confident that her brother, President Bongbong Marcos, will not allow this move by the DoF.

According to Senator Marcos, Apo Lakay had a mystical and powerful notion of rice.

“Para sa aking ama, ang bigas ay talagang hindi lamang pagkain. Para sa kanya, pagkatao. Unang-una, pagkatao 'pagkat walang dignidad ang kumakalam ang tiyan. Ikalawa, pagmamahal - dahil ang pagiging Kristyano ay manggagaling sa pagmamahal sa kapwa na pinapakain at hindi ginugutom. Ikatlo, ang bigas ay kalayaan. Kalayaan dahil walang demokrasya ng gutom,” added the senator.

The senator’s message to those in favor of rice importation during harvest season, “Lagot kayo! Mumultuhin kayo ni Apo Lakay!” (Photos: Sen. Marcos Office)

88 Micro rice retailers in CV receive cash aid from govt’s Sustainable Livelihood program

CEBU CITY -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Department of Agriculture (DA) conducted simultaneous payouts on September 14, of the cash assistance to micro rice retailers in Cebu-17, Bohol-6, Negros Oriental-63 and one from Siquijor that have been adversely affected with the implementation of Executive Order (EO) 39 that imposed a price cap on rice.

According to DSWD-7 regional information officer, Leah Quintana that these are the first batch of beneficiaries in Central Visayas and the cash aid is given thru the government’s Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) implemented by the DSWD.

Erwin Gok-ong, a rice retailer at Carbon Market and vice president of Cebu City-North of the Grain Retailers Confederation of the Philippines said that they were elated by the move of the government to aid them amid the price ceiling on rice and many of them were hoping that a second tranche of subsidy will be given so that they can continue selling affordable rice to the public.

Small-scale rice retailers in Cebu who received the PHP15,000 subsidy were happy that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recognized their contribution to the effort of bringing down the prices of the household staple and making it affordable to the consumers.

According to the DTI, qualified micro rice retailers for this subsidy include those registered with the Business Permits and Licensing Office (BPLO), registered as sole proprietors with the DTI, unregistered rice retailers validated by market administrators, and those verified by the DTI.

The DTI produces the clean list while the DILG, in partnership with LGUs, handles the logistics, including information dissemination to beneficiaries on the payout dates and the DSWD conducts the payout activities. (Photos: DSWD7)

Training on food safety awareness raises Cordova fisherfolks for quality of fish, seafoods

CORDOVA, Cebu – Food Safety Awareness Training organized by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), in collaboration with the AFOS Foundation through its FISH Visayas Project in August this year to raise the level of awareness, uplift and fortify the seafood industry in coastal Cebu, particularly in Cordova, where there is an abundance of fish and seafood products.

Some 80 members of the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) from Cordova’s market vendors and fisherfolk attended the training workshop focusing on the essential techniques and standards vital for safe and hygienic food handling.

AFOS Foundation through the FISH Visayas project recognizes the pressing need to enhance the skills and capabilities of market and industry participants to ensure that those in the fish and food industry can consistently deliver fresh and safe products to consumers.

AFOS said, the program not only strives to elevate the quality of seafood but also nurtures trust within the broader market ecosystem. In an ever-evolving market landscape, local players must adapt to new business paradigms to avoid losses from surplus and remain competitive.

To equip these stakeholders with the essential skills and knowledge, FISH Visayas paves the way for their growth and sustainability, AFOS added.

Dr. Jose Elli, an expert in food processing, led the Food Safety Training, provided a comprehensive understanding of hygiene standards and preservation techniques, which can extend the shelf life of seafood products that can benefit not only consumers but the industry stakeholders by reducing waste and ensuring product quality.

The FISH Visayas Project

The AFOS Foundation - Philippines through its FISH Visayas project is funded by the German Government since 2019 with more than Php 250 million to improve the income situation of fisherfolk and their families through sustainable value chains.  The project is also implemented in Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor.

Bez Acre Farm Products owned by Nicola Enriquez, Toledo City, District 3

At the booth of Bez Acre owned by Nicola Libre Enriquez of Toledo City now at #SugboNegosyo Expo at SM Seaside, Governor Gwen Garcia stopped by for a pre-taste of Nicola’s farm products.  Nicola also has a stall/booth at the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu Market every Saturday.

This is Bez Acre’s story: “It started with a rest house in Toledo, in the south of Cebu. It was where we spent our family vacations, a place where we could pause. Whenever we visited, we devoted our time into taking care of the land that surrounded our home, bearing in mind our roles as stewards of the earth.”

“We found how it strengthened our bond as a family to plant and harvest what we sowed in the soil together. Our father, the one who wears The Farmer's Hat, would frequent the farm bringing Bezalel, our youngest.”

“Bez then learned to love life in the fields as much as our father did, an inspiration to naming the farm Bez Acre.  Before long, Bez Acre flourished into a bounty of fruit-bearing trees and healthy vegetables that became the source for *the food on our table*. Our personal chef, who we call "Mama", began preserving the farm's produce by making pickles and jam.”

“These we shared to our friends as gifts. They have grown fond of our food and began sharing to their own communities.” (Photos: MBCNewman)
